This photo (ca.1884) shows the original 1882 Hackensack Water Co. Pump House
in the center behind the tree. On the near left is the Storage barn, then
the Superintendent's house and, farther back, are worker's homes. The
worker's homes were later moved to the west side of Madison Avenue south of
the bridge, adjacent to what is now New Milford High School's Football Field,
and were eventually demolished.
On the far right is the Coal building and Boiler Plant where the Company made
steam to power the pumps. The barely visible wooden steam pipe carried the
steam over New Milford Avenue. In the near front is the original Settling
Basin and to the near right is a wooden bridge over the western branch of the
Hackensack River. The River now goes through a conduit under New Milford
Avenue and residents have almost forgotten that the River is there.
